It is a rare event when a modern-day Stephen Grant crosses my path. The gun we have here is a BEST London 20 bore, assisted opening, sidelock, ejector gun with a serial number 18837 built between 1950 and 1968 based upon the proof marks (we have requested an Atkin, Grant, and Lang copy of the original build information. We may have it by the time this gun is sold) and it is in near new, 99% factory condition in all metal and wood finishes. If you examine the photos closely you will see the extraordinary sculpting of the frame, double contours on the bottom of the action, decorative fluted fences, and perfect metal to metal fit, and perfect screws. The engraving is still sharp displaying the rough feeling of the engraver’s hooks, and precisely hand-cut English scroll and fancy borders throughout. The 28” chopper lump barrels are perfectly struck, have perfect mirror bores, 99% of the London rust blue finish, a smooth tapered game rib, the factory finish marks still on the breech face, tight as new on the hinge and breech face. The gun has barely been fired. The assisted opening action is decisive, but easy to close once loaded. The wood is spectacular exhibition Turkish walnut, fit to perfect to the action, forend metal, and trigger guard, having excellent shooting dimensions, sharp drop points and a diamond shaped wrist. The gun weighs 5 ½ pounds and balances to perfection on the hinge pin. Add the 2 ¾” heavy proofs (for 1-ounce loads) and you have the perfect package. Atkin, Grant, and Lang is an amalgamation of 3 of the most well-known, highly respected gunmakers in London. They are still building some of the finest guns in the world on custom order basis and it takes years to have one made for you. This is a rare opportunity to own a basically new BEST London gun at a fraction of the cost in today’s new gun market and have it delivered within a week or so. The photos tell the visual story, the tables below tell the specifications. Cased in an English leather case, you won’t be disappointed in this gun. The value and perfection are all there, and guns of this nature only go up in value as you enjoy their use. Thanks for looking.
