Vintage Firearms is pleased to offer a wonderful Infanterie-Gewehr model 71/84. The I.G. Mod. 71 was the successor to the Dreyse needle gun and served as the Imperial German service rifle from 1871 to 1888. In the 1884 the Germany Army chose to update the I.G. Model 1871 design after troop trials in 1883 and the use of Winchester Repeating rifles by the Ottoman Forces against Russia in the Russo-Turkish War. The 1871 rifle was upgraded with an 8 round tubular magazine designed by Alfred von Kropatschek, and adjustable flip-up ladder sights and received the designation Infanterie-Gewehr 71/84 and became the first repeating rifle of the German Army. Although the I.G. Mod. 71/84 would never see direct front‑line service, it still received use by the German Navy, auxiliary forces during the First World War. This example, serial number 7880, was produced by Berlin’s Spandau arsenal in 1888. The barrel sports a Mirror 9.5/10 bore and the barrel and receiver retains 98% and 95% factory finish respectively with the rest fading to a pleasant patina. The rifle has some expected field marks which have been accumulated over almost 140 years! The serial numbers on the barrel, receiver, trigger guard, buttplate, and several screws match, however, the bolt and flag safety share a different serial number, and the ejector has a different serial number from both. What an exemplary and historically significant rifle from such an innovative period in firearms development. The I.G. Mod. 71/84 is often regarded as a pinnacle of small‑arms craftsmanship, with workmanship rarely matched in a general‑issue infantry rifle. An excellent choice for any die-hard militaria collector. Have a look at the detailed specifications and pictures below. Enjoy!
