Vintage Firearms is pleased to offer “The Other American Mauser.” After the German army swept across the country Belgium was left scrambling to arm its forces during World War I. FN’s factory was Belgium’s primary source of military rifles became occupied. This forced production to be outsourced first to Birmingham, England, and then to the American firm Hopkins & Allen. As the Belgian State Arsenal struggled to re‑establish itself abroad, the urgent need for rifles pushed smaller manufacturers into contracts they were ill‑prepared to fulfill. Hopkins & Allen was struggling after losing a major order and agreed in desperation to produce 140,000 rifles, an ambitious undertaking which ultimately led to the company’s bankruptcy upon the delivery of only 12,000 units. After bankruptcy, the whole company was sold to Marlin-Rockwell where the rest of the order was completed. This example, serial number 9645Q produced circa 1916, and is excellent overall condition. It retains 97% factory finish on the barrel, 98% factory finish on the bolt and receiver, and has a mirror 9.5/10 bore. Most of these rifles were modified during the Interwar Period, however, this one has managed to remain in its original configuration, and visible serial numbers on the rifle match. This is truly a once in a lifetime rifle, full length 1898 Mausers are already uncommon in the States so to see an obscure one is a rare treat. Have a look at the detailed specifications and pictures below. Thanks for looking!
