| General Specs: Springfield Armory, 1897, .30-40 Krag, 9lbs. 10oz. LOP 13 7/16″ Serial Number: 91730
Vintage Firearms is pleased to offer this wonderful Krag-Jorgenson rifle, developed in Norway by Ole Herman Johannes Krag and Erik Jørgensen in the late 1800s, the US adopted their rifle in 1892. The Krag was the first bolt action rifle ever issued to the US armed forces, replacing the Springfield trapdoor rifles, and served as the US service rifle during the Spanish American war, Philippine-American war, and Boxer Rebellion. What sets the Krag apart is its incredibly smooth action and ability to top up the 5-round magazine without needing to take the rifle out of battery, which certainly is advantageous in many circumstances! However, despite its many wonderful qualities, the Krag had its drawbacks, and was replaced by the M1903 Springfield after only 11 years of service. Although, the Krag-Jorgensen did still see use up into the Second world war by Norway and Denmark, until they replaced them with self-loading rifles. This example, serial number 91730, produced by Springfield armory in 1897 is a very nice example. The barrel retains 98% factory finish; the Receiver and bolt retain 90% factory finish which is fading to a pleasant patina, and the 30” barrel has a 7/10 bore. Overall, the rifle is in great mechanical condition and a capable rifle for the woods and prairies of North America, and a perfect choice for any militaria collector. Have a look at the specifications and pictures below. Thanks for looking!
