Marlin, truly needs no introduction, founded in the mid to late 19th century, was Winchester’s main rival, producing all manners of revolvers, rifles, and shotguns. After 10 years as the underdog, overshadowed by Winchester, Marlin eventually dethroned Winchester in the late 1800s as the primary producer of American lever guns and is currently the main supplier of Lever actions in the United States. Marlin’s 1894, an evolution of the 1889 design, focused on strengthening and simplifying the action, and making it less likely to pinch the shooter when rapidly firing (something the 1889 had a tendency of doing). The 1894’s side ejection made it popular among people in Alaska, Canada, and other subarctic areas of North America, especially among prospectors during the gold rush, as top ejecting lever guns had a tendency to freeze in colder temperatures. The side ejection also makes scope mounting significantly easier, as you don’t need to worry about side mounting or the cartridges striking your scope. This example, serial number MR89617H, produced in 2011 by Marlin, retains 99% stainless steel finish on all parts. The 16.5” barrel has a mirror 9.5/10 bore, and is fitted with grey laminate furniture, and a large loop lever. It also comes with an XS Lever Rail mounted, providing ample space to mount your 1913 Picatinny optic of choice.
