| General Specs: L.C. Smith, 1918, 12 Gauge, 8lbs. 4oz., Choked Full, LOP 14 1/4″, DAH 2″, DAC 1 3/8″ Serial Number: 580 L.C. Smith is known as the only commercially successful sidelock in American gun making, and when designed their Single Barrel Trap gun, they utilized their famous L.C. Smith rotary bolting mechanism that was said to “never shoot loose.” Most similarities end there. many competitors modified their current side by side actions to operate a single, centered barrel. The Hunter Arms Company, maker of L.C. Smith, started fresh and built this Specialty Grade trap gun with excellence, durability, and reliability in mind. Competition trap shooters put a lot of rounds through their guns, and this handsome shotgun is up for the task. It was advertised as having a quick action hammer that hit the “firing pin dead on the head – not at an angle as in most single barrel guns.” The hammer is actuated by a powerful coil spring rather than the V-spring used in L.C. Smith double barrel shotguns. This early gun, built in 1918, has a “Compensating Ventilated Top Rib” with round support posts. The ventilated rib is concave with matting, brass front bead, and a silver rib extension. The barrel is in exceptional condition with a mirror bore and nearly perfect blue. The wood and barrel have been professionally refinished, while the trigger guard and receiver hold their factory finishes. The engraving on the receiver is crisp, and you can feel the texture of the engraver’s tool mark. Most Specialty Grades had dogs engraved on each side, while this example shows a setter on point on the left side in a field scene, and quail in a field scene on the right side. Scroll and border work cover the remaining area of the receiver, trigger guard, top lever, along with bit of scroll border along the breech end of the barrel. The hearty beavertail forend is decorated with sharp, double bordered checkering in a point pattern. The banjo style escutcheon with roller release is engraved and blued, with very little wear. The capped pistol grip buttstock has a unique piece of wood, with fantastic figure and fiddleback on the “show side” of the stock, while the “cheek side” for a right-handed shooter has a more subdued grain pattern. At Vintage Firearms, Inc. (VFI) we inspect each gun before purchase, and our gunsmiths clean and service each as needed. This gun’s action and forend iron was stripped to the smallest parts, Ultrasonic cleaned and scrubbed, all parts inspected for integrity and function, lubricated, and reassembled, providing a VFI CERTIFIED GUN, a $375 service in our shop, and includes A 90-DAY MECHANICAL WARRANTY. Purchase an American Classic that can stand up to the rigors of regular trap shooting, with the class and confidence. Thanks for looking! Please enjoy the pictures of this wonderful gun.
