Merkel shotguns made in Suhl Germany demonstrate legendary German engineering, with strength and function always foremost in the design. The earlier Model 147 EL is a graceful, lightweight game gun utilizing 5 separate locking systems; Greener Crossbolt top fastener, the rib extension, the barrel lug through the bottom of the frame, and the traditional double underlug fasteners to give incredible strength and durability to this handsome double gun. This example, serial number 707968, was produced in October of 1968 by Merkel. The barrels. These are hand engraved shotguns in the upper end of the Merkel line. The mechanics on this gun, to include crisp trigger pulls, strong well-timed ejectors, auto safety, are in excellent working order. The barrels retain 98% factory finish and are tight on the hinge pin and breech face. Furthermore, the barrels measure 27 1/2” and are choked M/IM and have a mirror bore. The receiver retains 95% finish which for the most part has faded to a pleasant patina. The action’s lock up is tight thanks to the side clips and greener bolt. It weighs a handy 6 pounds 11 ounces, and balances gracefully 1/4” ahead of the hinge pin. Priced to sell and destined to give you enjoyment for generations, it would be hard to find a better modern-day double gun value. Detailed specifications and pictures below. Thanks for looking!
