The Winchester Model 1897 stands as one of the most important shotguns in American history. Designed by John Browning and produced from 1897 to 1957, it was the first truly successful exposed-hammer pump shotgun. Built by the millions, the 1897 saw use on farms, game land, and world wars alike, proving that slide-action shotguns belonged in the field alongside any double gun. This example, serial number 961704, was produced by Winchester in 1951 and functions exactly as it should – the action runs smooth, with the added fun slam-fire capability for those who run their guns fast. The 28″ barrel retains 98% factory finish, has 2 3/4″ chambers, 5+1 shell capacity, and a mirror bore. The receiver retains 97% factory finish, with some honest field marks on the stock and receiver that only add character and speak to a gun that was carried and used the way it was meant to be. The barrel is stamped MOD, though it actually measures Improved Cylinder – likely opened up at some point to make it a quicker-handling gun on pheasant, grouse, and quail. Overall, this is an honest, working Winchester that will get the job done in the field and make a great addition to any Winchester collection. Details and specifications are below.
