| General Specs: AyA, 1998, 28-Gauge, 5lbs. 12oz., Chokes SK/IC, LOP 14 7/8″, DAH 2 5/8″, DAC 1 9/16″ Serial Number: 16-03-645-98
The AyA No. 2 has long been one of the most respected values in the traditional sidelock game-gun world, and this exceptionally attractive 28-gauge example shows exactly why. Built in 1998, this is a beautifully proportioned small-bore weighing only 5 lbs. 12 oz. Its English stock has a generous 14 7/8” length of pull —a particularly desirable combination for the upland hunter looking for a genuinely light 28 gauge without abbreviated stock dimensions. With its 27” barrels and balance just forward of the hinge, the gun has the lively handling qualities one hopes to find in a properly scaled small-bore sidelock. Condition is outstanding. The engraved action and sidelocks retain abundant case color with wonderfully sharp scrollwork throughout, while the barrel retains 99% factory blue. The walnut is particularly attractive for a No. 2, with rich color and figure through both stock and forend, crisp checkering, and excellent wood-to-metal fit. Mechanically, the gun is equally impressive. The action and hinge remain tight, the ejectors are properly timed, the double triggers are crisp, and the bores are mirror bright. Barrel measurements are excellent, with light SK/IC constrictions—a very useful combination for grouse, woodcock, quail and other upland shooting. Traditional in every respect that matters, with double triggers, automatic safety, ejectors, straight grip and splinter forend, this gun also displays the finer touches expected of a quality sidelock, including a beautifully rolled-edge trigger guard—a subtle but appealing detail that speaks to the level of finishing throughout the gun. What separates this gun from the many No.2s encountered on the secondary market is the combination of gauge, weight, dimensions, condition and fine detailing. At 5¾ pounds with nearly 15” of stock, excellent barrels and outstanding cosmetics add up to an appealing package. A superb little Spanish sidelock for the upland hunter.
