This exceptional early J.P. Sauer & Sohn drilling combines the craftsmanship of a high-grade German sporting gun with the appeal of the classic American .38-55 Winchester cartridge. Built with true sidelock construction, extensive fine scroll engraving, cocking indicators, and a separate cocking lever for the rifle lock, it is a considerably more refined gun than the typical utilitarian drilling.

The gun has tremendous presence. The factory case-colored action is richly engraved, with the engraving remaining crisp and well defined. The beautifully shaped pistol-grip stock features a traditional cheekpiece, horn grip cap, trap-door cartridge storage, and fine checkering. At just over seven pounds with 27 1/2″ barrels and nearly 14 1/2″ of stock, it is unusually lively and well-proportioned for a drilling.

The sighting arrangement is particularly appealing as it combines the traditional barrel sight with a folding aperture sight for the rifle barrel. The shotgun bores are mirror bright, while the .38-55 rifle bore is excellent with strong, well-defined rifling.

Mechanically, this Sauer is strong. The action is tight, the ribs are sound, and the gun remains a highly usable example of early Sauer craftsmanship. The combination of 16-gauge shotgun barrels, .38-55 rifle barrel, easy handling, and high-grade sidelock construction makes it a great choice for collectors and sportsmen alike.

The gun retains the honest character expected of a fine early sporting arm. For the buyer looking for a high-quality Sauer drilling that is as appealing to carry and use as it is to study, this is an outstanding example.
