| General Specs: A.H. Fox, 1931, 12-Gauge, 7lbs. 10oz., Chokes M/F, LOP 14 3/4″, DAH 2 3/4″, DAC 1 1/2″ Serial Number: 34668 This is a RARE and unusual Fox AE with one feature that separates it from all other graded Fox guns: a factory-documented ventilated rib. The Cody Firearms Museum records (shown in the photos) confirm serial number 34668 as an AE Grade 12 gauge with 28-inch barrels, Modified and Full chokes, double triggers, full grip, and ventilated rib. The records also show the gun was later sold through Abercrombie & Fitch, adding an appealing bit of period provenance. In over 30 years of chasing and collecting Fox shotguns, founder Jay Shachter has only observed 5 with vent ribs. Of the most avid and well-known Fox collectors in this country, nobody has seen many more. A factory ventilated rib is the rarest extra order feature and is a must have in a proper collection of Fox shotguns. Rarity aside, the ventilated rib is raised and provides a single sighting plane like an over/under or auto loading shotgun, a functional advantage in the shooting world. The gun has received a high-quality, historically sympathetic restoration, with attractive case colors, deep barrel black, crisp engraving, and very handsome wood. It is fitted with a scarce period Jostam recoil pad (patent date on pad is 1931, the same year this Fox was built) that looks completely at home on the gun and gives it a current 14-3/4-inch length of pull. For a buyer who prefers a different length of pull or pad style, VFI’s gunsmiths can fit a replacement pad to suit the buyer’s preference. At 7 lb. 10 oz. this Fox has the kind of steady, composed handling that suits a broad range of shooting. The factory ventilated rib, Modified/Full chokes, ejectors, and centered balance make it equally at home on the target field, on high doves, in a duck blind, or blocking the end of a cornfield for pheasants. For the shooter, this is a beautifully restored, mechanically prepared American double with a configuration that is both unusual and highly useful.
