Built during the golden age of the German sporting-rifle trade, this handsome 8×57 JS Mauser Model 98 sporter was commercially proofed in September 1932 and displays the thoughtful workmanship that separates a proper prewar German sporting rifle from an ordinary converted military Mauser. It is exceptionally well configured with a 25″ barrel and full-length matted rib, traditional open sights, double-set triggers, engraved sporting bottom metal with lever-release floorplate, cheekpiece stock, horn grip cap and buttplate, and detachable claw mounts. A modern Vortex Diamondback 1.75-5×32 with gloss Cerakote finish has been fitted to the traditional mounting system, providing the vintage look with the advantages of modern glass. Condition is excellent throughout, with a mirror bore, strong finish, excellent screws and checkering, and only light field marks to the stock. At 7 lb. 10.8 oz., it remains a very practical sporting rifle rather than a heavy collector piece. The barrel carries period German proof marks including 7.9/57, Crown/N, 12.7-gram bullet proof, and a 9.32 proof date. With its .323″ groove diameter, this rifle uses the substantially more available 8×57 JS/IS ammunition rather than the older .318″ 8×57 I/J cartridge. Modern hunting loads deliver roughly 2,500 fps and more than 2,700 ft.-lb. of muzzle energy, making this a serious big-game rifle with plenty of class.
