| General Specs: John Dickson & Son, 1900, 12 Gauge, 6lbs. 4oz., Chokes CYL/LM, LOP 14 3/8″, DAH 2 5/16″, DAC 1 11/16″ Serial Number: 5262 Few sporting guns are as distinctive or elegant as the John Dickson & Son Round Action. Serial no. 5262 is an especially appealing example, combining classic Edinburgh gunmaking with excellent handling, strong factory documentation, and an unusually handsome custom case presentation. Dickson’s records show the gun was ordered July 10, 1900 and delivered November 23, 1900 to Mansfeldt de Cardonnel Findlay, a distinguished British diplomat. The records further note that No. 5262 was made to match an earlier gun supplied to Findlay in 1895. The factory ledger describes it as a Best double-patent ejector 12-bore hammerless gun with 28″ barrels and a finished weight of 6 lb. 6 oz. Today the gun weighs just 6 lb. 4.1 oz. and balances about 1/4″ ahead of the hinge pin, giving it the lively, effortless feel for which the Dickson Round Action is renowned. Current choke measurements are .003″/.014″, approximately Cylinder/Light Modified, a particularly useful combination for upland birds and traditional game shooting. The action has mellowed to an attractive silver-gray, leaving the fine shaded scroll engraving clear and highly visible. The figured straight-grip walnut retains excellent wood-to-metal fit, and during our previous ownership one of our gunsmiths fitted a handsome horn buttplate, bringing the current length of pull to 14 3/8″. Mechanically, the gun remains tight and centered on the hinge, with properly functioning automatic safety, strong and well-timed ejectors, crisp double triggers, mirror bores, and traditional 2 1/2″ chambers. During its previous ownership, a superb custom case interior was commissioned through Vintage Firearms at a cost of approximately $3,000. Individually fitted to the gun and accessories, it combines shaped fitting with traditional block-style construction and is finished with John Dickson & Son maker’s labels. The quality of the presentation is exceptional and even more impressive in person than in photographs. No. 5262 is accompanied by its factory documentation, historical information on its original owner, and the custom-fitted case. For the sportsman or collector who has wanted a genuine Dickson Round Action, this is a beautifully documented, highly usable example from the firm’s classic period.
