| General Specs: MAT, 1880, 8x50mm Lebel, 7lbs. 12oz. LOP 13 1/2″ Serial Number: N74634
The Lebel M1886 is a truly legendary gun, the first ever military rifle to fire small-bore, smokeless powder cartridge, and served as the official service rifle of the French military in the first world war, while somewhat outdated by 1914 it still held some advantages over many of its great war peers. Although manufacture of the M1886 rifles ended in May 1920, many were later rebuilt as M1886 R35 carbines in response to production shortages of the MAS‑36 rifle. These conversions were carried out at the Tulle Arms Factory (MAT), with roughly 50,000 units reworked. The modifications included shortening the rifle, modifying the magazine to hold three rounds, and adapting the design for improved handling. These carbines were primarily issued to colonial cavalry units and other auxiliary forces. This example serial number N74634, was produced by MAS in 1890 and received its carbine conversion in 1939. It sports a 17.5” barrel which retains 90% finish and has mirror 9/10 bore. The receiver retains 97% finish, and the rifle overall has normal military service wear, and comes with a French Lebel 1886 spike bayonet, which gives you a little extra reach with your carbine! A wonderful rifle with an interesting history and a perfect choice for the militaria collector. Have a look at the detailed specifications and pictures below!
