| General Specs: Mauser, 1881, 11x60mmR, 9lbs. 11oz., LOP 13 1/2″ Serial Number: 89950
Vintage Firearms is pleased to offer a wonderful Infanterie-Gewehr model 71. The I.G. Mod. 71 served as the successor to the Dreyse needle gun, whose shortcomings became apparent in the Franco-Prussian war despite German Victory. It served as the Imperial German service rifle from 1871 to 1888, but ultimately in some capacity served until the end of the First World War and were most notably employed by the Legendary Askari troops of German East Africa (modern day Tanzania, Burundi, and Rwanda) serving under Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck. The M1871 fires an 11mm black‑powder cartridge and is a single-shot bolt‑action that uses a single locking lug formed by the bolt’s guide rib, which locks ahead of the receiver bridge. Furthermore, the Gewehr 71 was the first rifle to employ the wing safety that so many other Mauser rifles have utilized since. This example serial number 89950, produced by Amberg in 1881 and bears the crowned “L” of Ludwig II of Bavaria. Amberg rifles tend to be well regarded for their higher quality when compared to other German arsenals like Danzig or Spandau. Furthermore, this rifle served in the 9th Bayerisches Infanterie-Regiment 3rd Company as weapon number 148 evidenced by “B.9.R.3.148” marked on the buttplate. This rifle is in excellent condition and features a 8.5/10 mirror bore, and has matching serial numbers on all visible parts including screw heads and barrel bands, marked either “99 50” or “89950.” This Amberg rifle comes with an M1871 bayonet, which is designated to a different regiment, marked 104. R. 2. 33. What a rare find! You don’t often see a rifle quite like this very often, especially with so much history and perfect choice for any die-hard militaria collector. Have a look at the detailed specifications and pictures below. Enjoy!
