Among Philadelphia Fox shotguns, the B Grade is considerably scarcer than the better-known C Grade, and in 16 gauge it is a genuinely rare gun. Published Fox production research indicates that only 186 B Grade 16-gauge guns were produced, making this example one of a very small group of surviving sub gauge B Grades. Just as significant is the way this gun was built. At exactly 6 lbs., it has the weight and lively handling that make a Fox so desirable. Combined with its straight-grip stock, this is a wonderfully proportioned 16 gauge—light enough to be a pleasure to carry all day, yet substantial enough to remain composed in the hands when the shooting starts. Serial number 300890, manufactured circa 1918, comes from the early period of Fox 16-gauge production and is fitted with Krupp Fluid Steel barrels. The gun carries the B Grade game-scene engraving on the bottom of the receiver, giving it considerably more visual presence than an A Grade while retaining the clean, purposeful character for which Philadelphia Fox guns are known. This gun underwent a complete professional restoration by Vintage Firearms, Inc. The work was performed with the goal of preserving the character of an original Fox rather than creating something overly polished or modern-looking. The case colors, barrel black, engraving, wood finish, straight-grip stock, and overall presentation remain extremely attractive today. The real story here is the combination of rarity and configuration. With only 186 B Grade 16 gauges produced, opportunities to acquire one are few. Finding one weighing just 6 lbs., with Krupp barrels, a straight grip, handsome restoration, and the handling qualities that collectors seek in a Philadelphia gun is rarer still.
