| General Specs: A.H. Fox, c1921, 16-Gauge, 6lbs. 7oz., Chokes M/F, LOP 14 1/2″, DAH 2 3/4″, DAC 1 1/2″ Serial Number: 357483A.H. FOX STERLINGWORTH CUSTOM XE UPGRADE 16 GAUGE, CIRCA 1921, 28” BARRELS, JIM DEMUNCK ENGRAVING, WALTER KOULOCH STOCK There are upgraded Fox shotguns, and then there are guns like this—projects undertaken with enough talent, taste, and understanding of the original maker that the finished gun deserves to stand on its own merits. Built on an A.H. Fox Sterlingworth 16-gauge action dating to approximately 1921, this exceptional custom gun was transformed in the spirit of Fox’s celebrated XE Grade. The extensive hand engraving was executed by noted American engraver Jim DeMunck and is properly identified beneath the action: “CUSTOM XE – ENGRAVING J.R. DEMUNCK.” DeMunck’s deeply cut foliate scroll covers the action, sculpted fences, top lever, tangs, forend iron, barrel breeches, and even the muzzles. The engraving has excellent depth and dimension, creating a gun unmistakably inspired by the great high-grade Foxes while remaining honestly presented as a custom upgrade. Equally important is the stock work by renowned stockmaker Walter Kouloch. Beautifully figured walnut was shaped with graceful Fox proportions, finely fitted side panels and drop points, crisp checkering, and an elaborate engraved and checkered steel buttplate. Kouloch’s work gives the gun the refined lines and handling qualities that separate a truly accomplished custom gun from a cosmetic upgrade. One particularly thoughtful detail is the forend fastening system. Rather than altering the original Sterlingworth barrel lug arrangement, the original pressure-fit attachment was retained while an XE-style latch was expertly inletted into the forend to complete the high-grade appearance. Beneath all of the artistry is a genuinely desirable 16-gauge field gun. With 28” barrels, a weight of just 6 lbs. 7.5 oz., excellent barrel integrity, and very usable stock dimensions, it has the balance and proportions serious upland shooters look for. A factory-original Fox XE occupies its own place in collecting history, and this gun is not represented as one. Instead, this is a beautifully conceived custom Fox XE upgrade, bringing together the engraving of Jim DeMunck, the stocking of Walter Kouloch, and the timeless handling qualities of a classic 16-gauge Fox. For the sportsman who appreciates fine American doubles, this is a particularly compelling combination of artistry, craftsmanship, and practical field usability.
