General Specs: DWM, 1918, 9mm, 31oz., 4″ Barrel
Serial Number: 4766i
Vintage Firearms Inc is pleased to offer this P.08 Luger manufactured by DWM (Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken) serial number 4766i with chamber date 1918. Initially manufactured in the last year of the First World War this gun still has its Imperial proof marks. This example features matching serial numbers including its two magazines. Once peace terms were signed, post war Germany was allowed a small military and police force. These institutions where allowed limited weapons, the Luger being one. Large wartime manufacturers such as DWM were passed over in favor of smaller firms such Simson & Co to produce the Army and Police requirements. Simson & Co was officially the only company allowed to supply Luger pistols and did so between 1925-1934. However, in contravention of the Treaty of Versailles DWM also reworked military arms. This example is most likely one of those guns, it still has its Imperial acceptance marks but uniquely the year date has not been removed, it has been re-barreled at the factory, this was common practice in the post war years. The gun features all matching numbers including the firing pin and two Schmeisser police magazines with aluminum base, one bears a Police acceptance stamp. The gun has the police sear safety added and comes with a 1935 made Robert Larson holster with Police starburst mark and tool. The holster and tool have different serial numbers. The bore is very good, shiny with well-defined rifling. The receiver and barrel show some light rubbing on the high points, everything looks like legitimate wear. The mechanicals function well, the safety operates with a positive indent. There is no play in the action and the guns tolerances are still tight, the trigger breaks crisply, overall, the gun feels solid and precise. DWM pistols are regarded as being amongst the better-built and finished Lugers and was probably why it was chosen for an arsenal refinish. This is a weapon that was produced at the end of the Imperial era, went on to be re-issued to the Polizei in the Weimar period and used through the Second World War before being liberated and brought to America. It’s got quite a history! Thanks for looking.
