Ansley H. Fox got it right with the small-bore Fox, the smallest, most well-proportioned, most reliable of all the vintage American double shotguns. The gun presented here, sn303581 made in 1936, has 90% original case color (thinning), excellent screws, 96% factory barrel blue, 80% factory charcoal blue on the trigger guard, and factory wood that is sound with the expected field marks, superb wood-to-metal fit, excellent checkering, and no cracks or repairs. All parts are original to the gun and all finishes are factory original. The gun is wearing a unique period pad made by Jotsam, and it is still pliable. The wood has not been cut. The LOP to the end of the wood is 13 13/16”, or about 14 1/8” with a Fox buttplate on the gun. This Fox has modern stock dimensions as you can see in the tables below this print. PRESENTLY IT IS DIFFICULT TO FIND 2 ½” 16GA. SHELLS. BECAUSE OF THIS, VFI GUNSMITHS HAVE CAREFULLY MEASURED THE BARREL WALL THICKNESS AHEAD OF THE CHAMBER AND HAVE LENGTHENED THE CHAMBERS TO 2 ¾” AND EXTENDED THE FORCING CONES TO 1 ½” TAPERS SO THAT YOU CAN SHOOT MODERN 2 ¾” LOADS THROUGH THIS GUN. This is a $360 service in our shop. With 30” number 2 weight barrels choked IC/LM, excellent bores, tight ribs, barrels tight on hinge pin and breech face, this gun is the ultimate vintage sporting clays gun as well as a great field gun for your upcoming season. The gun has excellent mechanics and the top lever that is well right of center. Fox graded small bores in excellent factory original condition are difficult to find in today’s marketplace as all the good ones have been tucked away for the owner’s pleasurable use, investment in tangible assets, and to hand down to the next generation. Because of this, prices have gone up significantly over the last few years and will continue to do so. What an attractive gun in great condition with no issues. A rare find in a world where the Fox small bore double guns have all but disappeared, and she has “curb appeal”! See the specifications in the tables below. Thanks for looking!
