Most agree the Fox Sterlingworth 20ga. is the best value for a small gauge vintage American double in today’s marketplace.  Built on a tiny frame (therefore lighter than like guns from Parker, L.C. Smith, Winchester, or Ithaca), dynamically balanced… the Sterlingworth is an affordable field and clays gun with the handling and shooting characteristics of a much more expensive gun.  The American double gun world loves the Fox shotgun.  Just try and find a decent Fox 20ga. in any grade.  There are few offered for sale, and for good reason.  The A.H. Fox 20 bore has been described as the “most perfectly proportioned 20ga.” boxlock ever made and it likely is true.  This gun, sn270047 made in 1938, is in superb factory original condition.  Look closely at the photos and you will see this late gun still wears the Philly style capped pistol grip stock with hard-to-find modern dimensions (2 5/8” drop at heel, 1 9/16” drop at comb, 14 3/16” LOP to buttplate), a real plus for your new bird gun.  Weighing just 5 ¾ pounds with the 26” #3 weight barrels choked M/F and balanced right on the hinge pin, this gun handles like a fine English 20-gauge game gun for WAAAY LESS MONEY.  The barrels are tight as new on the hinge pin and breech face with the top lever way right of center, the screws are perfect, all mechanics have been inspected, tested, and work as they should.  There are no cracks or repairs to the wood, checkering is excellent, and most all the factory finish is on the wood with the normal field marks you would expect on an 86-year-old gun.  The Fox Sterlingworth 20ga. guns usually have lots of drop at heel and comb and most modern shooters cannot shoot them well.  Additionally, many of the Sterlingworth guns have 2 ½” chambers and ammunition is hard to acquire.  This Fox has 2 ¾” chambers and VFI lengthened the forcing cone tapers to 1 ½” to reduce felt recoil and produce better patterns.  Other Sterlingworth 20ga. guns may have short chambers.  This gun has it all; great condition, superb mechanics, the ability to shoot modern and available ammunition, and great stock dimensions…just in time for a few weeks summer practice and the upcoming bird season.  Would make a great opening day dove gun!  Specifications are in the tables below.  Priced to sell, so don’t miss out on this gun.  Things are about to get “birdy”, guns are selling, and there aren’t many to choose from with these characteristics.  Thanks for looking!
