Most agree the Fox Sterlingworth 20ga. is the best value for a fine small gauge vintage American double in today’s marketplace. Built on a tiny frame (therefore lighter than like guns from Parker, L.C. Smith, Winchester, or Ithaca), dynamically balanced… the Sterlingworth is an affordable field and clays gun with the handling and shooting characteristics of a much more expensive gun. The American double gun world loves the Fox shotgun. Just try and find a decent 20ga. in any grade. There are few offered for sale, and for good reason. The A.H. Fox 20 bore has been described as the “most perfectly proportioned 20ga.” boxlock ever made and it likely is true. HOWEVER, TALL SHOOTERS CAN’T FIND ONE TO FIT, AS MOST WERE BUILT WITH 14” LOP AND LOTS OF DROP…SO WHAT TO DO? Here we have an answer in this fine Fox Sterlingworth that has been restocked with gorgeous English walnut, perfectly inletted to the action, checkered without flaw, 100% hand-rubbed oil finish, set up with 14 ½” LOP TO THE END OF THE WOOD, 15 1/16” to the end of the pad. With a 1” pad we can get up to 15 ½” LOP. A leather covered pad would look stunning on this gun. Built to modern dimensions of 2” drop at heel, 1 7/16” drop at comb, and 3/8” cast off, this is NOT your typical Sterlingworth with 3” of drop (we can bend the stock to your needs within 5 days of purchase). The gun was built in 1930 with 28” #3 weight barrels choked .006 right barrel and .013 left barrel (SK/LM), weighing just 5lbs. 15oz. even with the long wood and barrels, balanced on the hinge pin…this is a tall guy upland hunter’s dream gun. The cost to restock a Sterlingworth with this quality of wood exceeds $4000 and will take close to 2 years before you get your gun back. To find such a gun ready to go for the upcoming season is a rare opportunity. We lengthened the chambers to 2 ¾” and extended the forcing cones to 1 ½” tapers so you can shoot modern, readily available ammunition. The barrels are tight on the hinge pin and breach face like a new gun, the bores are bright and shiny, the ribs are tight, and the barrels are 100% gorgeous rust blue. The action is cleaned and lubricated, still showing some case colors, the screws are perfect, the mechanics are functioning just as they should. THIS GUN IS READY FOR YOU NOW, JUST IN TIME FOR SUMMER PRACTICE AND TUNING UP FOR THE BIRD SEASON THAT IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER. NOTHING NEEDS TO BE DONE EXCEPT BUY THE GUN AND TAKE HER FOR A RUN. Don’t miss out on this one-of-a-kind Fox 20-gauge Sterlingworth. Thanks for looking! |
