The Arisaka, one of the most misunderstood rifles of the Second World War, they received a horrible reputation due to their “last ditch” late war variants which appear crude and unsafe because of their simplified production. However, upon reflection the Type 99 is mechanically one of the most robust and reliable Mauser action rifles, and it could even be argued that Japan “perfected” the Mauser rifle. Chambered to fire the competent 7.7x58mm Type 99 cartridge, comparable to Winchester’s .308 cartridge. This example, serial number 15538 is a series 4 rifle produced by Nagoya Arsenal circa 1942. The Chrysanthemum Flower Seal above the chamber indicating imperial ownership, has been defaced upon leaving service in accordance with the Japanese Ordnance Bureau’s decree. This rifle has matching serial numbers, retains its dust cover, features a 10/10 mirror bore, and at some point, the wood has been refinished. Overall, an excellent example which would make a great addition to any World War II collection. Have a look at the detailed specifications and pictures below.
