Hollywood actors that order custom guns today are probably few and far between.  Robert Montgomery, former President of the Screen Actors Guild, performed comedic and dramatic roles in over 60 films, with two Oscar nominations, his own Emmy-nominated television show, and directing roles certainly bucks the trend!  Robert was close friends and hunting buddies with the famed Clark Gable.

Montgomery put his career on hold to join American Field Services; serving as an ambulance driver in France until the Dunkirk evacuation.  When the U.S. joined the war in 1941, Montgomery enlisted in the Navy and was present for the landing at Normandy.  He also kept an office at the Whitehouse during the Eisenhower administration, advising the President on his TV and other appearances.  Montgomery was active in Republican Politics and was very concerned about communism in the entertainment industry.

Whether you are a fan of film or not, this gun is a worthy, all-original, letter matching Winchester Model 21, with desirable features.  Engraved with the 21-1 floral style, the receiver, trigger guard, and forend latch plate, all retain strong factory blue.  The screws are engraved and in excellent condition.  The 26” barrels with mirror bores and a solid rib engraved “Custom Built for Robert Montgomery”.   A beautiful piece of walnut was selected for this fine American shotgun, the forend features an inlayed ebony tip, and the belly of the stock features a factory done oval nameplate with the Montgomery Family Motto “Garde Bien” or Guard Well and the accompanying logo of a lady holding a human head and an anchor.  The stock features a metal grip cap and hard rubber Winchester buttplate.  The double bordered, point pattern checkering is in excellent condition.  Overall, the finish on the wood and the blue of the barrels show that this was not a safe queen but had honest use in the field.  Just the right amount of honest wear that shows this capable 20 ga was used for its intended purpose and still has plenty of life to live.

The attractive Abercrombie & Fitch style case has had new leather straps placed for practicality, but we retained the original straps for posterity.

With modern dimensions and attractive chokes- Improved Cylinder and Modified, this 6 lb. 9 ounce gun has great balance and will be a competent gun for upland hunting or on the sporting clays course. What a great way to connect through time with an American Patriot, Veteran, Movie star and Director, go out and shoot his Custom Winchester Model 21, we are sure he’d approve.
