Winchester’s Model 70 was called the “Rifleman’s Rifle” by many in the know, including  shooting editor of Outdoor Life, Jim Carmichael.  Known for its accuracy, rugged durability, and overall good looks, the Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 has continued to be in high demand and has grown in value yearly.  The number of styles, configurations, calibers, and slight design changes make the Model 70 a collector/shooter’s dream.  Most of the Model 70 rifles produced were Standard rifles of various calibers.  The Super Grade was for shooters who wanted a deluxe rifle and came with an ebony forend tip, the Super Grade marking on the magazine floor plate, special stock configurations, jeweled bolt and magazine follower, inletted sling swivels, better fit and finish etc.  Of the over 1/2 million pre-64 Model 70 rifles produced, only 2.73 percent, or about 15,000 were Super Grades.  The AFRICAN, a Model 70 Super Grade that was produced only in .458 Winchester Magnum caliber from 1956 through 1963, was a special style all its own and total production was only 1226 rifles.  The .458 belted magnum is a true African dangerous game caliber, and the “African” rifle weighed 9lbs., came standard with a recoil pad, multiple reinforcing lugs to support and strengthen the stock against the robust recoil, and a forward sling swivel attached to the barrel rather than the stock.  This gun, sn549553 produced around 1962, is an example of the African, with over 99% factory finishes throughout…the gun has barely been fired.  The bore and chamber throat are mint, there are only a few light handling marks in the wood, and the jeweled bolt shows little wear.  THE CONDITION AND RARITY OF THIS SUPER GRADE MAKES IT A VERY COLLECTIBLE, INVESTMENT GRADE RIFLE that would be a classic to take on safari or to take down any of North America’s largest game.  Don’t let this one slip away…it is priced to sell, and thanks for looking!
